Report: Derek Jeter interested in buying Marlins
The Miami Marlins are very much for sale, and there are reportedly at least three interested parties — one of them involving one of the sport’s most iconic players.
Former New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter has expressed interest in purchasing the Marlins, according to Charlie Gasparino and Brian Schwartz of FOX Business. Wall Street executive Gregory Fleming is representing him in talks with the organization.
Former Florida Governor and Republican presidential candidate Jeb Bush is also leading a potential ownership group, having partnered with Citigroup. A third group, made up of Goldman Sachs-backed businessmen, is also in the running.
The report states that a deal to sell the team may be completed by May, but the timetable remains fluid.
Jeter has long wanted to own a team, and this seems like a fine opportunity to do just that. He’s obviously well-versed in the league and the sport and he maintains a home in Florida. It’s hard to imagine he wouldn’t be an improvement on Jeffrey Loria.
