Jacob deGrom finished for season, likely needs elbow surgery
The New York Mets got some very bad news as they chase a wildcard berth, as one of their star pitchers won’t be back until 2017.
General manager Sandy Alderson announced Saturday that Jacob deGrom, who had been slated to start Sunday, will be shut down for the season and require surgery to address an issue with the ulnar nerve in his right elbow.
Alderson said Jake deGrom will not start tmrw. Has issues with ulnar nerve. Has some pain. Unlikely to pitch rest of yr #Mets

Confirmed with ESPN's Pedro Gomez: 3-4 months recovery is generally applicable for ulnar nerve surgery, but can take as long as 6 months.

The issues started a few weeks back for deGrom, who struggled through August before revealing his elbow issue. The Mets do have a two game edge on the St. Louis Cardinals in the race for the second wildcard, but the loss of a key player like deGrom is sure to have an impact.
