New York Mets closer Jeurys Familia has been suspended 15 games over his offseason domestic violence arrest.
FOX Sports’s Ken Rosenthal first reported the suspension.

For Familia, suspension of 31 or more games would have delayed free agency by a year. Remains on track to hit open market after ’18 season.

According to Rosenthal, Familia will forfeit over $700,000 in salary due to the suspension.

Familia actually saw his charges dropped, but under the league’s policy, they have the authority to suspend him anyway for the arrest. The same thing happened to Aroldis Chapman, who also never faced charges but suffered an even stiffer penalty than the one Familia got. The Mets closer got just about the best news that he probably could have hoped for.
