Josh Donaldson, Twins reportedly agree to 4-year deal

The Minnesota Twins reportedly have added a huge piece in their quest to repeat as AL Central champs.

The Twins and former AL MVP Josh Donaldson have agreed to a four-year deal, Mark Feinsand first reported on Tuesday. The deal reportedly will pay Donaldson $84 million over four years and includes a $16 million club option for a fifth year, with an $8 million buyout. Jeff Passan says the deal can be worth as much as $104 million if Donaldson hits all his escalators.

Donaldson reportedly had four-year contract offers on the table from the Twins, Washington Nationals, and Atlanta Braves. He was said to have been waiting for a team to match his $110 million asking price, and the Twins were described as the favorites to sign him.

Donaldson, 34, hit .259 with 37 homers and 94 RBIs last season. He won NL Comeback Player of the Year as he returned from injuries that limited him in 2018 to help lead the Braves to a division crown.

Donaldson proved last season that despite his declining batting average, he still has a powerful bat and can be a valuable member of a contender.

The Twins went 101-61 last season to win the division but were swept out of the playoffs by the Yankees.
