The Philadelphia Phillies were able to take care of starting pitcher Aaron Nola before the two sides ended up in an arbitration hearing, and it sounds like the New York Yankees are hoping to do the same with Luis Severino.
Severino has an arbitration hearing set for later this month, but Jon Heyman of Fancred reports that he has had ongoing discussions with the Yankees about a contract extension.
Yankees and Luis Severino have had extension talks, as well, but no word they are close yet. Sevy’s scheduled arb hearing has yet to be heard.

Severino has been the Yankees’ best pitcher over the past two seasons and is poised to be the ace of their staff for years to come. The 24-year-old has earned a “Super Two” designation as an arbitration player, meaning he has less than three years of MLB service time but ranked in the top 22 percent, in terms of service time, among those who have amassed between two and three years in the Majors. He went 19-8 with a 3.39 ERA last season, so he is due for a substantial raise over the roughly $600,000 he made in 2018.
If Severino and the Yankees can come to an agreement without going to arbitration, it could look something like the deal Nola signed with the Phillies on Wednesday.
