Phillies pull off unusual baserunning feat against Mets

Two Phillies players running for home plate

The Philadelphia Phillies had the umpire seeing double late in Friday’s game against the New York Mets.

Phillies second baseman Bryson Stott was at the plate with the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the 7th inning at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia, Pa. The Mets, trailing 5-2, desperately needed a double play to get out of the inning. They were dealt a different kind of double dose on Stott’s at-bat.

Stott smashed a meatball slider deep to left-center field that clanged off the fence. Under normal circumstances, such a ball would have easily cleared the bases. But some indecision from Castellanos led to him sliding into home plate right next to JT Realmuto, who had run all the way from first base.

The Mets had two shots to get an out at home plate but went 0-for-2. The umpire looked like a windshield wiper signaling two safe calls in quick succession. Here’s another angle of Castellanos and Realmuto crossing home plate side by side.

Stott’s bases-clearing double gave Philadelphia an 8-2 lead over their division rivals. The Phillies coasted the rest of the way for a 10-2 win.
