Report: Some with Yankees wonder if Joe Girardi wants to keep managing

Joe Girardi

Even after he helped engineer a remarkable ALDS comeback for the New York Yankees, there are questions as to whether manager Joe Girardi wants to remain at the helm beyond this season.

Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports reported Thursday that some within the Yankee organization feel Girardi has grown “more uptight” and seems to be enjoying his job less. Rival executives watching from afar have said similar things.

“The Yankees look like they’re going to be quite good in coming years, and he’s done a good job. It’s just a matter of whether he’s used up a lot of energy,” an executive told Heyman.

“At times, I’ve gotten the feeling he’s had enough,” another said.

Girardi, who is in the final year of his contract, also recently moved his family to Florida, and said that they would be a major factor in any decisions about his future.

Publicly, Girardi has been mum on his future, though the decision likely rests with him — even after an awful Game 2, getting the Yankees to this point should be lauded and they’d probably want him back. It’s hard to manage in New York, though, and if the job becomes too taxing for him and he wants to spend more time with his family, it’s within the realm of possibility that he’d consider walking.
