Cam Schlittler apparently is not a fan of our eight-legged friends.
The New York Yankees pitcher Schlittler had an unfortunate moment with a spider ahead of the team’s spring training game vs. the Detroit Tigers at George M. Steinbrenner Field in Tampa, Fla. on Sunday. Yankees clubhouse reporter Meredith Marakovits of YES Network reported that Schlittler encountered a spider in his locker before the game and needed Yankees security to extract it for him.
Schlittler himself later confirmed the mishap in a post to his X page. The right-hander gave a shoutout to the Yankees’ security team for handling the arachnid.
“A spider was successfully extracted from my locker today,” Schlittler wrote. “Best security team in the league!
The 25-year-old Schlittler was a star for the Yankees as a rookie last season. He went 4-3 with a 2.96 ERA and 84 strikeouts over 14 starts after being called up in July. Schlittler then went on to perform admirably in the playoffs too, most notably throwing eight shutout innings in a winner-take-all Game 3 of the AL Wild Card Series against the rival Boston Red Sox.
But Schlittler clearly met his match on Sunday in the form of Peter Parker. If it is any solace for Schlittler though, he is far from the only MLB player to have been had by spiders before.
