Michigan’s baseball team is back in the College World Series for the first time since 1984, and they reached it thanks to a gutsy performance from pitcher Tommy Henry.
Henry pitched seven innings of two-run ball against UCLA in the deciding game of the Super Regional on Sunday to help the Wolverines win 4-2. Henry had been hospitalized with an illness and was pitching while sick. In fact, Henry even had a touch of pneumonia he pitched through.
So Michigan LHP Tommy Henry’s “flu game,” in which he pitched 7-inning, two-run baseball to beat No. 1 UCLA two days after a hospital visit, was more than that. According to doctors this morning, Henry had and has a touch of pneumonia, too.

Henry still held the top-ranked Bruins in check, allowing seven hits and no walks while striking out six for the win. His coach Erik Bakich called it the “gutsiest performance” he’s ever seen.

Michigan won the first game of the Super Regional 3-2, lost the second 5-4 in 12 innings, and won the third 4-2 thanks to Henry. The Bruins were the No. 1 team in the country and finished the season 52-11, so handing them their first series loss of the year was a big accomplishment.
