Braxton Miller switching to H-Back this season

Braxton Miller

Ohio State’s quarterback situation just got a whole lot more clear.

Braxton Miller told SI’s Pete Thamel that he will be switching from QB to H-Back this season, confirming a move that many speculated would happen. Not only will Miller be catching passes as a wide receiver, but as H-Back he can also take pitches, shovel passes and throw the ball on trick plays, Thamel says.

Miller first talked about the idea of switching to wide receiver with Ohio State’s strength coach in April. He talked with Urban Meyer about the possibility in May, and the two began watching film of top receivers. Miller then began catching passes from J.T. Barrett secretly that month.

A big reason for Miller making the switch has to do with his shoulder injury. The former Heisman Trophy contender injured his shoulder prior to last season and required surgery. He says he is still about two months away from being completely healed from it and will work more seriously as a receiver as a result. Miller told Thamel he anticipates spending about 80 percent of his team in training camp at H-Back and 20 percent with the quarterbacks.

With Miller moving positions, the QB situation appears to be working itself out. Now the Buckeyes can choose between Cardale Jones, who took over during the Big Ten championship game and guided the team to a national championship, and J.T. Barrett, the redshirt sophomore who got hurt, allowing the chance for Jones to take over last season.
