Marshall coach Doc Holliday is a candidate for the Florida head coaching job, according to a report.
Football Scoop says sources have told them Holliday is “very much a candidate” for the position, which became available when the Gators announced over the weekend that Will Muschamp would not be back as head coach.
Holliday played linebacker at West Virginia and had two separate stints as a coach at his alma mater before going to Marshall prior to the 2010 season. Holliday has gone 5-7, 7-6, 5-7 and 10-4 in his four full seasons as head coach. His Thundering Herd squad is 10-0 this year.
In addition to his recent success at Marshall, Holliday is attractive to Florida because of his ties to the program.
From 2005-2007, Holliday served as an associate head coach, safeties coach and recruiting coordinator on Urban Meyer’s Gators coaching staff.
Dan Mullen and Rich Rodriguez were said to be candidates for the job, but ESPN’s Brett McMurphy reported Monday that the two will not be considered. Online sportsbook Bovada has listed Mike Gundy as the favorite for the job, followed by Jim McElwain, Bob Stoops, Mullen, Rodriguez, Mike Shanahan, Steve Spurrier, Hugh Freeze, Gary Patterson and Gus Malzahn.
