Johnny Manziel’s former head coach arrested for DUI

Kevin Sumlin in a mug shot

Kevin Sumlin did not have the best bye week for Maryland.

Sumlin, who is a co-offensive coordinator for the Maryland Terrapins, was arrested early Saturday morning in Florida and charged with driving under the influence. He was booked by the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.

According to independent Maryland student newspaper “The Diamondback,” Sumlin refused a breathalyzer test, which results in a suspension of his license for a year. Sumlin pleaded not guilty and waived arraignment.

The sheriff’s office website says that Sumlin was released at 8:56 AM on Saturday morning on cash bond.

Sumlin was hired by Maryland in February and is in his first season as the Terrapins’ co-offensive coordinator. The 59-year-old is best known for his 6-year stint as Texas A&M’s head coach from 2012-2017. The Aggies went 11-2 in his first season, which is the year Johnny Manziel won the Heisman Trophy. The Aggies slipped to 9-4 the following season, which was Manziel’s final year with the program.

Sumlin went 51-26 at A&M. He got the A&M job following a successful four-year stretch as Houston’s head coach from 2008-2011. Sumlin spent three seasons as Arizona’s coach from 2018-2020 before being fired following an ugly loss to rival Arizona State.

Sumlin is 95-63 in his career as a college head coach. Maryland had the week off last week. The Terps are 5-2 and visit Northwestern this weekend.
