Mack Brown admits ‘huge mistake’ not recruiting Baker Mayfield

Mack Brown

Baker Mayfield has become one of the most successful quarterbacks in college football this season. However, he was lightly recruited out of high school, and that is particularly painful for Texas Longhorns fans, considering he played high school football twenty miles from Texas Memorial Stadium.

Texas has struggled to find consistency at the quarterback position, missing out on a cavalcade of Texas high school quarterbacks who became stars elsewhere. Former coach turned analyst Mack Brown admitted that letting Mayfield get away was not one of his better moves.

“Boy, all of us made a huge mistake,” Brown told Jason Kersey of the Oklahoman last week.

“I’ve been criticized enough about quarterbacks, but this is one that not only I missed, but everybody missed.”

Brown has a point, because everyone else missed Mayfield too. He had only three FBS scholarship offers and had to walk on at Texas Tech before transferring to Oklahoma.

And if it’s any consolation to Texas fans, there’s no guarantee Mayfield would have gone there. He’s a lifelong Oklahoma fan.

“I don’t think I would be happy there, even though it’s in Austin,” Mayfield said earlier in the season. “I love Austin but I don’t think I’d be happy playing there. Didn’t give too much thought about it.”
