Texas fans throw trash on field over head-scratching call
Texas fans were furious Saturday over a critical pass interference call late in the Longhorns’ clash against Georgia.
Georgia led Texas 23-8 late in the third quarter at DKR-Texas Memorial Stadium in Austin, Texas. The Longhorns’ comeback bid got a huge boost when Texas cornerback Jahdae Barron intercepted a Carson Beck pass and returned it all the way to Georgia’s 9-yard line.
However, referees initially flagged Barron for defensive pass interference despite what appeared to be minimal contact. Based on the replay, Georgia wide receiver Arian Smith could have arguably been the one penalized for offensive pass interference.

Longhorns supporters were understandably upset at the referees for wiping away a game-changing play. The fans let their opinions be known by pelting the field with beer cans and water bottles. Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian had to call for the fans to stop.

In an unusual turn of events, the officials reviewed the play and eventually ruled that there was actually no pass interference on the play.

Texas was awarded possession on Georgia’s 9-yard line and scored a touchdown two plays later.
The referees did accurately correct the call in favor of the Longhorns. But whether the trash throwing caused the review or not, the incident may very well encourage similar unruly behavior from fans in the future.
