Agent paints troubling picture of how players feel about Cowboys’ coaching
Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett may still have the support — at least publicly — of the man who cuts his paycheck, but the seat underneath him gets warmer by the week. While he’s not the only issue in Dallas, there are more than a few people who view Garrett as the biggest.
Calvin Watkins of The Athletic spoke with several people inside and outside the Cowboys organization about the current state of the team, and the general consensus is that Garrett is respected in the locker room. However, one player agent noted the difference between being respected and your players believing you’re the right man for the job.
“I asked 10 players, they said they are one of the worst-coached teams they’ve been on,” the anonymous agent said. “Lack of attention to detail and the attention to detail is on the wrong thing.”
As Watkins notes, Garrett was the 2016 NFL Coach of the Year and has coached many quality offenses in Dallas. However, another agent with a player who is currently on the Cowboys roster said the dysfunction on that side of the ball has been obvious in 2018.
“They need to straighten things out,” said the agent. “Just look at how they play on offense.”
Jones recently said he does not expect to make a coaching change, and he has been saying that for years and sticking to it. Oddsmakers aren’t buying it, and they think it would be stunning if Garrett was still the head coach of the Cowboys next season.
While personnel is partially to blame for the lack of success Dallas has had this season, some highly questionable decisions Garrett has made may have cost the team a win or two. Even Jones might not be able to justify keeping Garrett around if that trend continues.
