Former NFL QB rips Caleb Williams

The new revelations about Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams led one former NFL quarterback to go off on his “breathtaking” sense of entitlement.

Boomer Esiason reacted harshly to a new book which claims Williams and his father sought to prevent Williams from being drafted by the Chicago Bears in 2024. Esiason even went as far to imply that coach Matt Eberflus’ eventual firing was no surprise in light of Williams’ disapproval of him.

“The level of entitlement is breathtaking,” Esiason said. “It’s no wonder why he failed initially, and it’s no wonder why the coach got fired. Now they go out and get an offensive coach in Ben Johnson, and now it’s on his a–. It’s going to be on his a– to live up to these so-called lofty expectations that he has for himself, and that his father has for his son.

“I understand there could be a discussion, ‘Hey, this is where quarterbacks go to die.’ Well, go fix it. Be the reason the team is going to turn it around, and you be the player that you think you are. I would just tell him, keep your mouth shut. You’re going into the greatest league that there has ever been for the sport that we all love. You’re going to have the chance one day to make $500 million. … Keep your pie hole shut, go out and play football, earn your keep, and earn your respect.”

In fairness to Williams, he did eventually relent and decide to focus on being the one to turn the Bears around. Some of the other quotes attributed to Williams and his father in the book, however, are quite cringe-worthy, and make Williams come off as entitled no matter what he and his father’s intentions were.

As Esiason noted, Williams will have few excuses going forward. Johnson is an offensive coach, and the quarterback has ample weapons to work with.

Williams did show promise as a rookie for the Bears. He threw for 3,541 yards with 20 touchdowns and six interceptions, though he was also sacked a league-worst 68 times.
