Report: Cowboys checking in on Sean Payton ‘can’t be discounted’
The Dallas Cowboys have officially launched their coaching search, and there’s still belief in some circles that Jerry Jones will try to go for a home run hire.
According to Charles Robinson of Yahoo Sports, one source insists that the chances of the Cowboys checking in on New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton cannot be discounted, particularly after the team’s early playoff exit Sunday.
5. Last Thursday, a source insisted a Dallas "look-in" on #Saints' Sean Payton can't be discounted, even if it involved trade assets. Especially if New Orleans lost this weekend. I still feel like this would be the same old unrealistic visit to the Payton well, but here we are.

Payton is linked to the Cowboys job frequently, so it’s hard to say there’s much in this. The fact that the links just won’t go away suggests Jones would probably love to get his hands on the Saints coach, but other reports say it just isn’t realistic. The Cowboys have been interested in the past, but after Payton signed a new five-year deal back in September, it’s tough to imagine the Saints suddenly becoming more willing to negotiate his availability, even after a surprisingly early playoff exit.
