Davante Adams says he is dealing with ‘major injury,’ unsure of return date

The Green Bay Packers managed to score plenty of points without their best wide receiver in last week’s win over the Dallas Cowboys, and they will likely need to overcome the same circumstances in Monday night’s game against the Detroit Lions. As Davante Adams admits, the injury he is dealing with is not a minor one.

Adams spoke with reporters after missing another practice on Thursday, and he called the turf toe he is battling a “major injury.” He said the pain is worse than any injury he has dealt with in the past, including when he hurt his ankle in 2015.

“I can’t really tell you when I’m going to play,” Adams said, per Jim Owczarski of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. “It doesn’t feel how I want it to feel at the moment, but we definitely have time, so we’ll just kind of play this thing (out), and I know Mr. (Matt) LaFleur will definitely be able to take care of any other questions regarding that.”

Adams said his injury will not require surgery, but he would run the risk of hurting it further or suffering a setback if he returns too quickly. Because of that, he said he is “not interested in winning any medal of honor awards” by playing through it.

“Well, the fact of the matter is I’m not playing through anything when it comes to this, it’s not a toughness thing. … I’m going to get back when it’s healed and it’s ready to go. I’m going to listen to my body and listen to my doctors,” Adams said.

Aaron Rodgers typically performs much better when Adams plays, as the receiver is by far his favorite target. Fortunately for the Packers, their defense has played well this season and Aaron Jones provided a major spark in the running game against Dallas. Green Bay is 4-1 and can be patient with Adams, but he is their most consistent producer in the passing game. The injury is a legitimate concern.
