Washington Redskins safety DJ Swearinger was abruptly released Monday a day after his public criticism of the team’s playcalling, presenting him with a potentially awkward situation.
Swearinger blasted defensive coordinator Greg Manusky for not playing zone against Titans backup quarterback Blaine Gabbert on Saturday, and Washington decided that his comments warranted his immediate release, according to Swearinger himself.
The issue here is that Swearinger is actually a Pro Bowl alternate, and could play in the game in a few weeks. He said if that happens, he may try to play wearing the uniform of his college, South Carolina.

DJ Swearinger is a Pro Bowl alternate. He said if he gets to play in the pro bowl he may try to wear a South Carolina jersey and helmet. Would be odd if he gets to play in the pro bowl a few weeks after being cut.

That would certainly be a first. It would also be a rather amusing end to what will certainly go down as one of the strangest seasons in Swearinger’s career.
