‘Serious concern’ over Jadeveon Clowney’s knee

Jadeveon Clowney

Jadeveon Clowney’s rookie season was a disaster and went nothing like he or the Houston Texans would have liked, and now there is “serious concern” about his future.

Clowney had sports hernia surgery in June after being drafted No. 1 overall, underwent arthroscopic surgery on his knee after getting hurt in Week 1, returned briefly later in the season and continued having problems with his knee. He only played in four games, recording seven tackles and no sacks.

Clowney was eventually placed on season-ending injured reserve and underwent microfacture surgery on his knee Dec. 8, which is a procedure notorious for taking away a players’ explosiveness and requiring long recovery times. As of late January, Clowney could not put weight on his knee, but that isn’t stopping the Texans from saying they are hopeful he will be ready for Week 1. However, that optimism might be misguided.

According to some new information, the Texans might not be expecting to get anything out of Clowney this year. Here is what Tony Pauline at TFY Draft Insider reported Thursday:

I’ve spoken with a number of people since the Senior Bowl who have openly said there is serious concern over Jadeveon Clowney’s future. A variety of opinions have come from numerous sources, including those close to the Texans. I’ve heard everything from don’t expect much from Clowney in 2015 to the belief he may struggle to ever regain full health from the microfracture surgery. The reasoning for the latter is Clowney underwent the procedure at an early age.

Between other football players like Brandon Graham and Gosder Cherilus who have undergone microfracture surgery, we have seen how rough the recovery can be. Clowney and the Texans will be lucky if he can return to his explosive self at any point in the future. We’ll be pulling for him. And suddenly those little controversies about him liking girls’ photos on Instagram during games seem so silly …
