Jay Gruden shares thoughts on Alex Smith’s injury recovery
The Washington Redskins will have an uncertain quarterback situation heading into the offseason after Alex Smith suffered a gruesome leg injury earlier this year, and head coach Jay Gruden can only hope for the best.
While speaking with reporters on Monday, Gruden was asked for an update on Smith’s condition in the wake of the multiple surgeries the veteran reportedly had to undergo.
Washington HC Jay Gruden on Alex Smith’s condition: “We're obviously hopeful he can turn a corner and start the rehab process and possibly get back on the field. That’s all we can hope for right now.”

Smith suffered a spiral fracture in his leg during a game against the Houston Texans last month, and he reportedly had issues with infection while in the hospital. The infections complicated his recovery and led to speculation that he may never play football again, but a more recent report indicated he should be able to fully recover.
At the very least, Gruden does not seem certain of if or when Smith will return.
