Cromartie knew he was likely to be cut by the team; the move saves the team $9.5 million against the cap. Though the team plans to explore other cornerback options — they’ve expressed interest in Alterraun Verner — they would likely want to bring Cromartie back for a lower price.
Distracted by off-field issues, Cromartie initially played poorly with the Jets, but he had an excellent 2012 season before having a rough time last season because of an injury. He’s still a fine cornerback and will draw plenty of interest on the open market.
