Michael Irvin: Lombardi Trophy should be named after Bill Belichick if Patriots beat Texans

Bill-Belichick

If the New England Patriots manage to win on Thursday night with a third-string quarterback and potentially no Rob Gronkowski, Michael Irvin is proposing that the Vince Lombardi trophy be renamed.

Irvin took to Twitter on Tuesday to do a little bragging with his three Super Bowl trophies, but his overall point was that it would be incredible if the Patriots improve to 3-0 despite all the obstacles they have faced early on this season.

The Patriots already managed to win a Tom Brady-less game in Arizona against a team many consider a Super Bowl contender. They then took care of the Miami Dolphins at home, despite almost blowing a huge lead after Jimmy Garoppolo left with a shoulder injury.

With Brady suspended four games, a 2-2 record for New England in his absence would be admirable. Now that Garoppolo could be out until Brady gets back (more on his injury here), improving to 3-0 would take another masterful coaching performance from Belichick and his staff.

Reporters tried to ask Belichick who his starting quarterback will be on Thursday night against the Houston Texans, and the response was exactly what you’d expect. But if rookie Jacoby Brissett starts and the Pats still find a way to win, I’m with Irvin — a Hall of Fame coaching resume would get even stronger.
