One of the ripple effects we can expect to see as a result the Miami Dolphins bullying saga between Jonathan Martin and Richie Incognito is other players coming forward and sharing similar stories. Last week, former Philadelphia Eagles offensive lineman Shawn Andrews revealed that he was the victim of mistreatment from teammates at one point in his career. In doing so, he basically called out Donovan McNabb.
Speaking in very vague terms, Andrews told Mike Missanelli of 97.5 The Fanatic that he basically had no friends on the Eagles and that his teammates spread lies about him.
“The only guy I could trust on that team was flat out Brian Dawkins,” he said, via The 700 Level. “Now you imagine — I’m going to tell you this and you can maybe figure it out and try to decode it. Would you want to go to work at a place where you’re putting your heart out every single day and the guy that you’re protecting is saying things behind your back that isn’t true?”
When asked if he was referring to McNabb, Andrews admitted that he was. He also said he would not classify what went on as “bullying,” but implied that McNabb and other teammates were looking to make life difficult for him during a contract negotiation. Apparently some of the players on the team were claiming Andrews frequently ate at McDonald’s, which he said was not true.
“Bullying is a strong word. I wouldn’t consider it bullying,” he said. “[But you’re] putting everything you have on the line for another person, and that person is saying some very, very, very untrue things about you to other guys … how would that make you feel?”
Andrews then spoke about the time he asked then-head coach Andy Reid if he could address the locker room. He said he addressed his concerns with the team and that McNabb “rolled his eyes” and blew him off. Shortly thereafter, Andrews asked Reid for a trade.
It was well-known that Andrews battled depression during his time in Philly. As The 700 Level noted, his struggles were documented in a New York Times article that was written in 2009. That being said, there is no indication that McNabb or anyone else did or said close to the level of what Incognito allegedly said to Martin. Not everyone gets along in the workplace. If we start comparing every case of alleged “mistreatment” to the Martin case, things will get out of hand in a hurry.
