Hall of Fame quarterback Sonny Jurgensen has died, his family announced Friday.

In a statement released through the Washington Commanders, Jurgensen’s family confirmed that the former quarterback died at the age of 91.

“We are comforted by the knowledge that he brought joy to so many,” the statement read. “This weekend as we enjoy the game that he loved so much, join us and raise a glass, share a story and a smile, as we celebrate the extraordinary life of a man who was, to us, the greatest of all time.”

Jurgensen was one of the most accomplished quarterbacks of his era. He was first named an All-Pro in 1961 with the Philadelphia Eagles, then went on to have several outstanding seasons with Washington. He won three individual passing titles and has the highest passer rating of any quarterback from the pre-1978 dead ball era at 82.62. He was also a Super Bowl champion in 1960 with Philadelphia, albeit as a backup.

After his playing career ended, he went into broadcasting, and served as color analyst for Washington games until his retirement in 2019.

The Commanders retired Jurgensen’s No. 9 in 2022.
