Vikings coach calls firing of Mike McCarthy ‘sad’
Minnesota Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer expressed sympathy following the news of the firing of Mike McCarthy.
Zimmer learned of the news of McCarthy’s firing following the Vikings’ loss to the New England Patriots. He called it a “sad” day that McCarthy will no longer be one of his peers.
Vikings coach Mike Zimmer on Packers firing his counterpart: “I think it’s sad. It’s a sad day. Mike McCarthy’s a good coach. I think it’s a mistake. Just one man’s opinion.”

On Sunday, the Green Bay Packers announced they parted ways with McCarthy following the team’s 20-17 home defeat to the Arizona Cardinals. The decision reportedly came as a surprise to McCarthy. It may have caught Zimmer by surprise as well.
The firing of McCarthy leaves Zimmer as the longest tenured head coach in the NFC North despite him only being in his fifth year on the job.
