To suddenly, as an adult, have what made you so grand unreachable, is a very difficult adjustment... like being a beauty queen and having your face disfigured. Meth, unlike most drugs, is plentiful, can be made, is cheaper, is longer lasting. He's flailing because he never had the chance to adopt this skills most are learning in their twenties because he was a star then and meth is a drug like no other.
