Fantasy FootballWaiver Wire 2010

Working the Waiver Wire: Week 3

As well as one can draft their fantasy football team, inevitably a combination of injuries and surprises arise throughout the year. As a result, working the waiver wire is a key component of winning your fantasy league. Here is some advice on whom to pick up and whom to leave alone in the free agent pool:

MUST-HAVE

Demaryius Thomas, WR, Broncos – 8 catches for 97 yards and a touchdown in his NFL debut? Umm, hello Bay Bay! This kid can play, he has a competent quarterback, and the Broncos love to throw it. He appears to be a keeper.
Kyle Orton, QB, Broncos – If he’s still available in your league, it’s time to pounce. Read the excerpt above on Thomas for more. Just wait until they get past difficult week five and six matchups and the pay off will be there.
Neil Rackers, K, Texans – He’ll score plenty of points in that offense. If he’s available in your league, it’s time to scoop him up and trade in your kicker if he’s not producing.
Lawrence Timmons, LB, Steelers – 26 tackles in two games? I’ll take it. Expect him to keep producing on that stellar defense.
LaRon Landry, S, Redskins – 28 tackles, a sack and two passes defended so far. He clearly is benefiting from the switch to the 3-4 defense and loving it.
*Recommended last week, make sure they’re not still available: Clay Matthews, Eddie Royal, Mark Clayton

ONE-WEEK MONSTER PLAY

Washington Redskins Defense – They’re making plays and they’re facing the low-scoring Rams. Sam Bradford’s four picks are quite tasty too.
Tampa Bay Defense – They’re probably available because they were so bad last year, but they’re much improved this year. Nice home matchup against the Steelers and Byron Leftwich.
Mike Tolbert, RB, Chargers – If Ryan Mathews isn’t ready for Sunday, roll with Tolbert. The bowling ball should get at least a score against Seattle.

NICE ADDITION TO YOUR ROSTER

Mario Manningham, WR, Giants – Two straight weeks of similar, strong numbers. Probably won’t keep it up but he’s a solid WR option.
Tony Moeaki, TE, Chiefs – He’s got great hands and is a reliable target. If only KC threw it more he’d have more value. You could do worse at TE.
Jason Snelling, RB, Falcons – Michael Turner should be fine, but can’t hurt to have his backup if the groin acts up again. We know he is a good fill-in.
Cameron Wake, LB, Dolphins – They raved about him in the off-season. Three sacks later it’s easy to see why.

DON’T EXPECT A REPEAT

Darrius Heyward-Bey, WR, Raiders – Contain your excitement, Raider fans. 6 catches for 80 yards almost equaled his totals from last year. Don’t get carried away.
Josh Morgan, WR, 49ers – 6 catches for 70 yards was a nice outing, but outside of Vernon Davis I don’t trust any SF receiving targets.
Brandon Pettigrew, TE, Lions – Last week it was Tony Scheffler racking up stats as a Lions TE, this week it was Pettigrew. I’d be surprised if it happened again.
Josh Cribbs, WR, Browns – 3 catches for 74 yards but most of it came on a 65-yard touchdown bomb. He’s not much of a target otherwise.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Aaron Hernandez, TE, Patriots – 6 catches for 101 yards last weekend. If he has another good week, it will be time to pick him up.
BenJarvus Green-Ellis, RB, Patriots – It’s a messy situation but he could benefit from Kevin Faulk’s knee injury.
