Cowboys WR Cole Beasley does not like being compared to Wes Welker

Wes Welker has caught 554 balls over the past five seasons. For those of you who aren’t familiar with NFL stats, that is an astronomical amount of catches for a five-year period. In three of those five seasons, Welker led all NFL receivers in receptions. With that in mind, it would stand to reason that any NFL rookie — especially an undrafted free agent — would be honored to be compared to the four-time All Pro. Cowboys wide receiver Cole Beasley is 5-foot-8, 182 pounds. Welker is listed at 5-foot 9, 185 pounds. That doesn’t mean Beasley wants to be compared to Tom Brady’s favorite target.

“I get tired of it a little bit because I feel like I have a little bit more speed than Wes Welker does,” Beasley said Tuesday on 105.3 The Fan’s RAGE radio show according to the Dallas Morning News. “He’s got a little bigger frame than me but I feel like I’ve got a little more versatility to my game than he does. … I do have similarities with him but I feel like I can play a little bit more outside, as well as inside.”

As an undrafted free agent, the former Southern Methodist Mustang will have to work incredibly hard just to make the Cowboys 53-man roster. Beasley can only hope the Dallas coaching staff sees him as a similar threat to Welker. Beasley added that he thinks Welker is “one of the best in the game,” but didn’t hold back when asked about Welker’s infamous catch that may have cost New England the Super Bowl against the Giants.

“Oh yeah,” he said. “You’ve got to catch that one.”

Hasn’t Wes already heard enough grief from Tom Brady’s woman? Short guys usually stick together, but something tells me that isn’t going to be the case with Welker and Beasley.
