Richard Sherman: I was the open man for Colin Kaepernick

After Thursday’s loss, San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick has now thrown just three touchdowns and eight interceptions in five career starts (including playoffs) against the Seattle Seahawks. Simply put, Richard Sherman and company have owned Kaepernick.

Earlier this week, Kaepernick said that he would not shy away from Sherman’s side of the field like other teams have done in the past.

“I’ll throw to whoever’s open,” he said.

Kaepernick threw two interceptions on Thursday, and both went to Sherman. The first was intended for Brandon Lloyd, but Sherman had tight coverage and read it perfectly. The second was underthrown and Sherman made a great play on the ball.

Naturally, Sherman was quick to take a swipe at Kaepernick after the game.

“There was an opponent [Kaepernick] who said he would throw it to the open man,” Sherman said. “He didn’t care who was out there [in coverage]. I was the open man.”

Sherman praised several of the Niners receivers, but he didn’t mention Michael Crabtree. Given the history between the two, we doubt that was an oversight.

The All-Pro cornerback also shared his feelings about 49ers fans.

“Somebody threw a glass bottle at the end,” Sherman said. “Every time we came through the tunnel, there were a lot of vulgar things being said. Sometimes you should let sleeping dogs lie. It makes you appreciate your own fans and how they stay for the whole game regardless of the outcome.”

Seattle’s 19-3 victory was for much more than just bragging rights. The Seahawks now have sole possession of second place in the NFC West and have a leg up on San Francisco in the wild card hunt. Seattle also gets to play the Niners and division-leading Cardinals again.
