Rob Ryan: Rex Has Multiple Rings Envy

Earlier this week, Jets coach Rex Ryan said he thinks the Chargers would have won a couple of Super Bowls if they had named him head coach in 2007. Norv Turner wasn’t pleased with the comment and reminded Ryan that he hasn’t won any Super Bowls with the Jets yet.

Cowboys defensive coordinator Rob Ryan, Rex’s twin brother, was asked about Rex’s remark. He said it was an issue of ring envy.

“Let me tell you something, that whole comment there is about multiplicity. Rex is constantly using that multiple ring thing, multiple ring this, multiple ring that, multiple ring this.

“The simple fact is it had nothing to do with Norv Turner. I coached with Norv. Norv is a great coach and a good man. He’s done obviously a great job in San Diego.

“The multiplicity thing is really ring envy,” Rob Ryan continued. “It’s ring envy. His twin brother has two rings, his dad has three rings, he only has one, so you can see the multiplicity thing.

“It’s embarrassing, because it’s all about the family. It’s a sibling rivalry and Norv got in the way of a sibling rivalry.”

Rob won his rings as a linebackers coach for the Patriots. Buddy won his as defensive line coach for the ’68 Jets and as defensive coordinator for the ’85 Bears. Rex’s only ring came as defensive line coach for the ’00 Baltimore Ravens. Something tells me that if he does get a ring with the Jets, he will actually quiet down. Maybe Rob is right and it is a case of multiple ring envy.
