Rory McIlroy hits spectator in head (Video)

Rory McIlroy had a strong opening round at the Open Championship on Thursday, and it would have been even better if it weren’t for the winds pushing his drive on 15 off the fairway and into a spectator’s noggin.

McIlroy’s drive on the par-4 15th hole hit a dude in the head and resulted in the fan receiving some medical attention. Rory gave him a signed glove as an apology, and he ended up double-bogeying the hole to go from -3 to -1 for the round. Luckily he finished birdie, par, birdie to get back to -3 and tied for 6th in the tournament.

When Phil Mickelson hit a shot that landed in a spectator’s shorts at the Northern Trust Open in February, he also gave the fan a signed glove. For a shot to the dome, I think a signed club would have been more appropriate, Rory.

UPDATE: McIlroy apparently paid for the man’s hotel room and gave him dinner money.
