A new team may be about to get in on a pursuit of free agent ace Blake Snell.
The Toronto Blue Jays are quietly monitoring Snell, according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today. The Blue Jays may be hoping Snell’s asking price drops, but clearly have interest in the reigning NL Cy Young winner.
Snell is reportedly asking for at least $240 million, but no team has come close to that asking price. According to Nightengale, the New York Yankees offered Snell closer to $140 million, which was promptly rejected. They proceeded to instead target Marcus Stroman, which is likely to take them out of the running for Snell.
The Blue Jays have been linked to some very big names this offseason, but have not been able to land any of them. Snell may represent their best shot, especially since he does not seem to have a significant market right now, at least at his current price.
Snell is fresh off an award-winning season with the San Diego Padres, where he went 14-9 with a 2.25 ERA. He has plenty of familiarity with the AL East, having spent five years with the Tampa Bay Rays to begin his career.
