New details emerge from ex-MLB star Rafael Furcal’s ‘missile’ arrest

Former MLB All-Star Rafael Furcal was charged with two felonies in Florida earlier this week, and some new details about the alleged incident have surfaced.

Police records in Broward County, Fla., showed that Furcal turned himself in to authorities on Wednesday after a warrant was issued for his arrest. The 47-year-old was charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and throwing a deadly missile into an occupied vehicle.

The Florida law regarding the missile-related charge reads as follows:

“Whoever, wantonly or maliciously, shoots at, within, or into, or throws any missile or hurls or projects a stone or other hard substance which would produce death or great bodily harm, at, within, or in any public or private building, occupied or unoccupied, or public or private bus or any train, locomotive, railway car, caboose, cable railway car, street railway car, monorail car, or vehicle of any kind which is being used or occupied by any person, or any boat, vessel, ship, or barge lying in or plying the waters of this state, or aircraft flying through the airspace of this state shall be guilty of a felony of the second degree…”

The wording of the charge led many to believe Furcal threw some sort of explosive into a vehicle. That was not the case, though the allegations are still troubling.

According to Andy Slater of Fox Sports 640 South Florida, Furcal is accused of throwing rocks at a driver behind a supermarket. The victim was reportedly left bleeding and chased Furcal, who fled the scene in a vehicle.

NEW: Former MLB All-Star Rafael Furcal's arrest stems from an incident where he's accused of throwing rocks at a driver behind a Publix supermarket.

The victim, after he started bleeding, then chased Furcal on foot and punched him before Furcal took off in his pickup truck.

It is unclear what preceded the altercation.

Furcal played 14 MLB seasons split between the Atlanta Braves, Los Angeles Dodgers, St. Louis Cardinals and Miami Marlins. He was named an All-Star three times and won the NL Rookie of the Year award in 2000.

A career .281 hitter, Furcal won a World Series with the Cardinals in 2011. The Dominican Republic native had 113 home runs, 587 RBI and 314 stolen bases during his career.

The arrest is not the first for Furcal. He was also arrested for driving while under the influence during his rookie year in 2000 and again in 2004.
