Smokestack at Great American Ballpark catches on fire, stands evacuated (Video)

At Great American Ballpark in Cincinnati, the iconic Power Stacks shoot fireworks if a Reds player hits a home run and flames when a Cincinnati pitcher records a strikeout. During Friday’s game between the Reds and Giants, one of the stacks caught on fire for real.

During the sixth inning, flames could be seen atop the right stack, which caused the stands in the immediate area to be temporarily evacuated. Thankfully, the Cincinnati Fire Department was quick to respond and had the fire extinguished promptly.

Tim O’Connell, vice president of ballpark operations, indicated the stacks will cease operation for a few days as a result of Friday’s events.

“Unfortunately we’re going to be without that attraction for the next couple days,” he said via the Cincinnati Enquirer. “We’re going to work with the fire department and Rozzi’s (fireworks provider) and our own folks to make sure that we have everything in place before we set that back into operations.”
