Royals’ Whit Merrified writes thank you note to fans after hitting streak ends

Kansas City Royals second baseman Whit Merrifield saw his impressive hitting streak come to an end on Thursday night, and he took some time to reflect on it afterword.

Following his 0-for-6 night in a loss to the Seattle Mariners, Merrifield took to Twitter to post a thank you note to the fans at Kauffman Stadium who gave him a standing ovation when his hitting streak ended at 31 games.

Merrifield’s hitting streak dated back to last season, and there has been some debate over whether a streak should be able to span multiple seasons. In the event that he ever did break Joe DiMaggio’s 56-game hitting streak, there would have been an even bigger discussion.

Either way, Merrifield’s hitting streak will go down as one of the longest in MLB history.
