Yankees reportedly decide on replacement for John Sterling
The New York Yankees have settled on a replacement for radio announcer John Sterling after his retirement.
The Yankees are nearing a deal with current Seattle Mariners television broadcaster Dave Sims to make him the voice of the Yankees on WFAN, according to Ryan Glasspiegel of the New York Post. The deal is not yet finalized and the Yankees would have to approve of WFAN’s choice, though it is hard to believe terms of a deal would be discussed without the go-ahead from the team.
The 71-year-old Sims is certainly an established choice. He has called Mariners games since 2007 and has multiple decades of national experience, including with ESPN and a stint as the lead voice for Westwood One’s “Sunday Night Football” radio coverage. He has some ties to New York, as he hosted a sports talk show for WFAN from 1989 to 1993.
Sterling leaves behind big shoes to fill, and he had some highly entertaining commentary about the Yankees’ shortcomings during the playoffs. Fortunately for Yankee fans, Sims has previously shown the same penchant for brutal honesty.
