The Colorado Buffaloes are looking for a new permanent head football coach, and Eric Bieniemy could be a candidate for the job.
Colorado lost its head coach when Mel Tucker resigned on Tuesday night to take the job at Michigan State. On Wednesday, the Buffs named Darrin Chiaverini their interim head coach.
CU is seeking a new head coach and reportedly has expressed interest in Bieniemy. 9News in Denver’s Mike Klis says the interest between the sides is mutual.
Colorado also plans to interview Chiaverini for the full-time job.
Bieniemy, 50, was a star running back at Colorado from 1987-1990. He returned to coach there after his NFL playing career and served as their running backs coach from 2001-2002 before going to UCLA and then the Minnesota Vikings. Bieniemy came back to Colorado as the offensive coordinator under Jon Embree for two poor seasons where the team went 4-21.
Bieniemy has rebuilt his reputation as a coach for the Kansas City Chiefs since 2013. He has served as Andy Reid’s offensive coordinator the past two seasons and received interest for NFL head coaching vacancies but was passed up for all the jobs.
