Pat Narduzzi uses Dabo Swinney’s ‘guts’ phrase after upset
Pitt pulled off a major upset on Saturday night as they handed previously unbeaten Clemson their first loss of the season. Afterwards, Panthers head coach Pat Narduzzi used a very interesting choice of words during a postgame interview.
During his postgame interview with ESPN, Narduzzi said his team “had a lot of guts” in their win over Clemson.
“It’s a team win, and I’m so proud of our guys,” said Narduzzi. “We’re bowl eligible. We knocked off the No. 2 team in the country. Our guys had a lot of guts tonight.”
Ordinarily you wouldn’t think anything of what Narduzzi said since it sounded very standard for a coach after a win. However, a closer look at one particular word could leave Clemson fans unsettled.
You may recall that after Clemson’s thrilling win over Notre Dame last year, Swinney talked specifically about motivating his players by telling them to “bring your own guts.” The BYOG movement became a catch phrase for Clemson and Swinney for the season, resulting in a hash tag, motto and some clothing.
Maybe Narduzzi didn’t mean anything by saying his team had a lot of guts. Maybe that was just his way of describing the situation. But there are others who may think his use of the word “guts” is a little more than a coincidence.
