Baker Mayfield considering going without NFLPA agent

Baker Mayfield

Many of the top NFL Draft prospects are getting ready for their professional future by interviewing player agents and deciding who will represent them. One player who is considering skipping that step is Baker Mayfield.

Sports Business Journal’s Liz Mullen reported on Wednesday that Mayfield is considering going without an NFLPA agent.

Mullen says Mayfield picked an L.A. based agency to represent him for off-field opportunities, but he may not hire an NFLPA agent. The thinking is that with the rookie wage scale, there isn’t much to negotiate and therefore less of a reason to have an agent.

Contrary to Mayfield’s thinking, agents can be powerful allies who help organize and assist the player’s transition into the NFL. They can set up workouts for the player before the draft, help put them in touch with good people who will get them ready for their NFL future, and they work to enhance the player’s reputation or defend them in the case of bad publicity. They also can help steer a player to the right team, which is something important to a player like Josh Rosen.

Mayfield, who won the Heisman Trophy this season, is expected to be a first-round pick.
