Carolina Panthers reportedly could sell for nearly $3 billion

The Carolina Panthers are up for sale, and they’re expected to fetch a handsome amount. According to one report, experts are saying the franchise could be sold for $2.3-$2.8 billion.

The Charlotte Observer reported Thursday on the status of the Panthers sale and provided a profile on each of the reported buyers.

NFL Network reported that billionaire David Tepper, who is a five percent owner of the Pittsburgh Steelers, is interested. The Observer was unable to confirm his interest.

CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora reported that Frank and Lorenzo Fertitta are interested in buying the Panthers, though the Observer says they have received mix reports about that. The brothers made over $4 billion upon selling their ownership of the UFC.

Billionaire Ben Navarro, whose father was a college football coach, has interest in buying the team.

Charlotte businessman Felix Sabates is part of a group that includes current Panthers minority owners and NASCAR drivers.

The presence of multiple buyers could obviously create a bidding war, which would push up the price of the sale.

The Panthers were purchased by original team owner Jerry Richardson for $206 million in 1993.
