Deion Sanders went out of his way to reach out to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after they signed his son Shilo as an undrafted free agent.
Shilo Sanders, a safety who played for his father at Colorado, landed with the Buccaneers Saturday after going undrafted. The move happened quickly, and the team heard from Deion Sanders shortly after.
Buccaneers GM Jason Licht revealed on WDAE that Deion called coach Todd Bowles to thank him for giving Shilo a legitimate shot.
“Coach Prime called him Saturday night and thanked him for giving [Shilo] a fair shot,” Licht said, via Joe Bucs Fan.
It’s a nice message from Deion, though for some it will raise questions about whether he is still being too hands-on with his sons as they enter the NFL. The risk, of course, is that he might call out an organization publicly if he feels they did not give one of his sons that fair shot.
For now, though, things appear to be positive. Like all undrafted free agents, Shilo faces an uphill battle to make the Buccaneers’ roster, as he has not been viewed as a top-tier NFL prospect. He will ultimately get the chance to win a job, but if he fails to do that, it will be interesting to see if there is any reaction from the Sanders family.
