Drew Brees is progressing in his rehab from a thumb injury suffered in Week 2 against the Los Angeles Rams, though he’s not going to come back before he’s ready.
Brees joined WWL in New Orleans for a radio interview on Wednesday night. According to quotes shared on Twitter by The Athletic’s Katherine Terrell, Brees has been working hard on his rehab so he can return without missing too many games. However, Brees understands the risks of returning too early, which can include re-injury or not playing at a high level.
Brees said "If I come back and I'm … putting myself at greater risk of re-injury or having to change something about … throwing motion or something just to accommodate the injury or not playing with the same confidence as a result …I'm doing myself and my team a disservice"

Brees has progressed to the point that he can now use his right hand to eat and brush his teeth.
Brees said he's two weeks out from surgery and the thumb is getting stronger. He said every day has been a huge jump. He can brush his teeth now and eat with his right hand, when he couldn't do that a few days ago. "Just little everyday stuff."

The Saints were 1-0 under Brees before losing to the Rams in the game where he got injured. The team has won both its games with Teddy Bridgewater starting and is now 3-1.
The original timetable for Brees’ absence was six weeks, which still seems reasonable based on the progress the 12-time Pro Bowler has made.
