A former top overall NFL draft pick is once again searching for a new team.
The Carolina Panthers released veteran pass-rusher Jadeveon Clowney on Thursday, according to multiple reports.
Clowney signed a 2-year, $20 million contract with the Panthers ahead of last season. There was talk of him potentially being traded at the deadline last year, but Clowney was batting an injury at the time and no deal ever came together.
Clowney played in 14 games for the Panthers and finished with 46 total tackles and 5.5 sacks.
The 32-year-old Clowney has bounced around to several different teams over the last few years. He played the first five years of his career with the Houston Texans after they drafted the former South Carolina star with the No. 1 overall pick in 2014.
Though he has battled injuries, Clowney is just two years removed from a very productive 2023 season. He matched a career high with 9.5 sacks and had 2 forced fumbles that year with the Baltimore Ravens.
Clowney has also had brief stints with the Seattle Seahawks, Tennessee Titans and Cleveland Browns.
While he may not be as explosive as he was earlier in his career, Clowney is still capable of getting after the quarterback when healthy. His contract was likely more of an issue for the Panthers than anything.
