Jay Gruden to interview for Jaguars offensive coordinator job

Jay Gruden

The Jacksonville Jaguars are searching for a new offensive coordinator after they somewhat surprisingly parted ways with John DeFilippo, and Jay Gruden is on the team’s list of potential candidates.

Gruden is scheduled to interview with the Jaguars, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports.

Gruden was fired in his sixth season as the head coach of the Washington Redskins after the team got out to a 0-5 start this season. He was the offensive coordinator for the Cincinnati Bengals prior to landing that job, so he has plenty of experience calling plays.

As Garafolo noted, Gruden said recently that he was hoping to land another head coaching job in 2020, but he was never really considered for any. He will probably have to spend another year or two as an offensive coordinator before his name gets thrown back into the head coaching mix.

The Jaguars have interviewed at least one other former head coach, and Gruden probably has as good of a chance as anyone at landing the job. Jacksonville ranked 26th in the NFL in scoring last year, and they are likely trying to find someone who can do a better job with Nick Foles than DeFilippo did.
