One NFL team is catching strays from Jerry Jones in a lawsuit over the league’s handling of its “NFL Sunday Ticket” package.
The NFL is the subject of a class-action lawsuit claiming the league broke antitrust laws by exclusively offering the “Sunday Ticket” package at an inflated price exclusively through DirecTV, a satellite provider. Among those testifying in the league’s defense was Jones, who defended the league’s broadcast model of selling television rights as a package instead of allowing it to be done on a team-by-team basis.
Jones’ point was that his Dallas Cowboys would make a lot more money than most other teams if they were able to negotiate their own TV deal. The Bengals were his unfortunately example in favor of his argument.
“I am convinced I would make a lot more money than the Bengals,” Jones said, via Joe Reedy of the Associated Press. “I’m completely against each team doing TV deals. It is flawed.”
Jones is probably right, whether the Bengals would want to admit it or not. The Cowboys have a lot more out-of-state fans than Cincinnati, or indeed most other teams. It is still pretty amusing to see the Bengals get caught up in the comparison, though.
On the bright side, Bengals fans can point out that, unlike Jones and the Cowboys, they have played in a Super Bowl recently.
