Report reveals Jets’ plan for Zach Wilson
Zach Wilson is entering the final week of another tumultuous season with the New York Jets, and it sounds like it will be his last.
Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reported on Sunday that the Jets will look to trade Wilson this offseason. While it may seem like Wilson’s value has hit rock bottom, Rapoport notes that teams are almost always able to get something in return from quarterbacks rather than cutting them.
“My understanding is this offseason they’re expected to seek to trade Zach Wilson, moving on from a pick that simply did not work out well,” Rapoport said. “You say, how could the Jets trade him? I would say this — every quarterback gets traded. I do not expect the Jets to cut him.”
Wilson took over as New York’s starter after Aaron Rodgers suffered a torn Achilles in Week 1. Head coach Robert Saleh stood behind Wilson even as the quarterback struggled for several weeks, but the former No. 2 overall pick was eventually benched for Tim Boyle.
Not surprisingly, Boyle did not fare any better. Saleh then went back to Wilson, though there were reports that Wilson was reluctant to accept the assignment. That was a strong indication that Wilson wants to move on from the Jets.
Rodgers recently said he expects to play for the Jets for at least two more seasons. That could be another factor in Wilson wanting a fresh start.
