Johnny Manziel was dropped by Nike at some point after the NFL season ended, essentially confirming that the former Heisman Trophy winner’s brand has become toxic.
ESPN’s Darren Rovell on Tuesday reported the news about Manziel being dropped by the Swoosh. Although the timing of the news seems noteworthy since it comes the same day that Manziel expressed uncertainty about whether he wants to continue playing football, Rovell later clarified that Manziel was not dropped on Tuesday, but at some point after the season ended.
Nike and other brands simply cannot have an athlete who cares more about partying than playing represent them. Throughout the offseason, Manziel has made it clear that his priority is partying and getting into trouble. It seems as if more and more companies are recognizing that.
