Teddy Bridgewater not expected back with Saints

Teddy Bridgewater

Drew Brees announced on Tuesday that he will continue playing next season, and that likely signals the end of Teddy Bridgewater’s time with the New Orleans Saints.

Like Brees, Bridgewater is set to become a free agent next month. Brees and the Saints likely already have a handshake agreement in place for a new contract, and ESPN’s Adam Schefter notes that Bridgewater’s tenure with the Saints unofficially came to an end with Tuesday’s news.

Bridgewater is expected to draw plenty of interest as a starting quarterback. One report this week said he could end up getting a contract worth $30 million per year, which would obviously be a price the Saints can’t afford for a backup quarterback.

Bridgewater is now several years removed from his devastating knee injury, and he played well in place of an injured Brees last season. He threw for 1,370 yards, nine touchdowns and just two interceptions in six games. The Saints went 5-1 during that span, with Bridgewater keeping them in the playoff hunt.

There have been reports that Bridgewater wants to remain in New Orleans and will only leave for a perfect situation, but it would be extremely hard for him to turn down $30 million per year and a starting job no matter which team offered it.
