Philip Rivers is having one of the worst years of his career in a season that began with very high expectations, and speculation is growing that it could be his last with the Los Angeles Chargers.
There is a “very real chance” that the Chargers could part ways with Rivers following the season, according to Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports. Rivers is set to become a free agent this winter, and he and the Chargers have reportedly not been discussing a contract extension. With the team preparing to move to a new stadium in Inglewood and Rivers still commuting from his home in the San Diego area, there’s a sense that the two sides could be headed for a divorce.
One team official told La Canfora that the Chargers have made no personnel decisions yet for 2020, but the organization understands Rivers’ poor play has been one significant issue for LA during a disappointing 4-7 season. Rivers has thrown a whopping 14 interceptions through 11 games after throwing 12 all of last year.
Rivers had a particularly horrible game in last week’s loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, and some particularly sloppy throws led to a four-interception night.
While he will turn 38 next month, Rivers had one of the best seasons of his career just last year. He has been defying age much like Tom Brady and Drew Brees, so it would not be a surprise if the Chargers choose to bring him back and focus on revamping other parts of their offense. Stability at quarterback is extremely hard to find in the NFL, and Rivers could probably bounce back in 2020 with the right pieces in place.
